Family Planning Health Worker Certification

Family Planning Health Worker Certification (formerly Basic Health Worker Certification) is a three-day course designed to assist non-licensed staff in developing the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to work in a family planning clinic. The course consists of a series of classroom experiences including lectures, group activities, discussions, and role-playing and is supplemented with a comprehensive self-study manual.

Who should attend?

This course is designed for new family planning clinic staff. It is also a great refresher for more experienced staff, including: nurses, medical assistants, health educators, public service employees, community health workers, peer providers and other interested program staff.

What You Will Learn

Objectives – Day 1

By the end of Day 1, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how to get informed consent from a client.
  • Demonstrate 3 teaching methods health educators can use to help clients learn better.
  • Evaluate a client's knowledge and skills about a birth control method.
  • Identify federal and state requirements for what information must be given to clients regarding birth control.
  • Describe the male and female reproductive systems.

Objectives – Day 2

By the end of Day 2, participants will be able to:

  • Explain when a woman can and cannot get pregnant during her menstrual cycle.
  • Explain how a health worker can help a client with sexual problems and concerns.
  • List steps a client can take to help prevent STDs.
  • Write an education plan.
  • Conduct an effective patient education session on at least one birth control method.

Continuing Education

There is an additional $15 administration fee per certificate, payable on site.

Nurses:

Provider approved by California Board of Registered Nursing. Provider #CEP 12241, for 17.1 contact hours.

Health Educators:

The California Family Health Council, Inc. is designated as a provider of Category 1 continuing education contact hours in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Health educators attending this program may report up to 12 contact hours.

Family Planning Health Worker Challenge Exam

For those who already have basic family planning knowledge and patient education skills, we offer the option of a challenge exam. This exam is based on the self-study manual "Fundamentals of Family Planning" 2007. You must have this manual to successfully complete the oral and written examinations needed for certification.
