Educating and Counseling Adolescents

A “How To”, activity-based workshop to train family planning program staff to work proactively with teen clients around issues of consent, family involvement, and sexual coercion.

Who Should Attend

This workshop is designed for family planning program staff responsible for outreach and education, including: Outreach workers, Nurses (LVNs, RNs), Health Educators, Community Health Workers, and other interested staff.

Program Topics & Objectives

At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the application of minor consent and confidentiality laws in practice;
  • Identify the ages at which teens can consent to specific services; and
  • Demonstrate how to discuss consent and confidentiality with a minor and their family.
  • Define sexual coercion, sexual assault and rape.
  • Identify indicators of unwanted sexual contact.
  • Demonstrate counseling strategies to help a teen client respond to sexual coercion.

Health Education

The California Family Health Council is designated as a provider of Category I continuing education contact hours in health education by the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. Health educators attending this program may report up to 5.0 contact hours.
